Weston's U11 Development team, the Wonders, won their first game of cricket this weekend. The level of improvement shown by this squad of players over the course of the season is quite outstanding. None of them had played a hard ball game of cricket until only a couple of months ago and we are now witnessing a team who are working together as a unit as well as making significant strides with their individual skills.
Weston batted first and amassed 306. Each batting pair showed an ever increasing awareness of shot selection and judgement when running between the wickets. The top scorers were Finley Curley (21), Tyler Thorpe (16), Zach Turner (10) and Will Davis (8), although all players contributed runs and only 5 wickets were lost during the innings.
In the field the boys were really focused and supportive, offering encouragement and backing this up with excellent stops in the outfield and accurate throwing. Eli Watson, Thomas Howard and Finley Curley each picked up a wicket but Will Davis, Stan Davidson, Tyler Thorpe, Louis Dancey, Eric Davidson, Reubens Thompson and Zach Turner all contributed with fine spells of bowling. Stanton Drew - Chew Valley finished on 275 and thus a win for Weston by 31 runs.
Emotional scenes ensued at the end of the match as most of the players enjoyed their first ever win. Judging by their work ethic, there will be plenty more to come.
