Weston First XI put in a strong performance in the first league match of the season at home against Lansdown, despite the match being abandoned due to the weather.
Lansdown won the toss and asked Weston to bat first. Making his debut for Weston, Adam Sylvester was unlucky to be out for a duck in the third over. This brought fellow debutant, Cam Melly, to the crease. He put on a partnership of 99 with Steve Snell before being caught on 54. Snell batted on in a stand of 95 with overseas player Ranith Liyanaranchchi. Snell fell for 106 off 109 balls, the first of a tumble of wickets for Lansdown.
Rani got off to a slow start, taking his time to adjust to the conditions but then accelerated on his way to a score of 64, which included four huge sixes, seeing Weston to maximum batting points. At the end of the innings, Weston were 282-9 as the rain started to fall.
With no more play possible, the points were shared, but this was a positive start to the season for the team with contributions coming from most players.
Weston will look to continue this great start next weekend away at newly relegated Taunton St Andrews, where it is hoped the weather will allow the bowlers to have a game as well.
