WsMCC ready for the new season – Senior team previews

he 2018 season starts tomorrow at WsMCC, and there is again cause for optimism following an excellent club wide 2017 campaign.

1st XI

Last season: 1st in WEPL Somerset (promoted)

League: WEPL 2 – Bristol/N Somerset

Captain: Rob Turner

The 1st XI have been boosted with the arrival of Somerset fast bowler Paul van Meekeren and new overseas recruit Ben Gully, the return to the squad of Weston stalwarts Pete Trego and Charl Willoughby, as well as being able to retain the majority of the promotion winning core from last season, as they look to reestablish their place in WEPL 2. With a fixture against the Lashing World XI also in place for May 27th, it promises to be another exciting season for our 1st XI.

2nd XI

Last season: 4th (Somerset League – Division 2)

League: Somerset League – Division 2

Captain: Dominic Mayo

The 2nd XI have a new captaincy duo in place for 2018, with promotion winning 3rd team skipper Dom Mayo moving up to the 2s, bringing Luke Morgan with him as a vice captain. After a solid 4th place finish in 2017, the team will aim for more of the same in the upcoming season, with an emphasis on bringing through some new young talent to support the established players.

3rd XI

Last season: 2nd in Somerset League – Division 6N (promoted)

League: Somerset League – Division 5

Captain: Josh Knight

After a 2nd place finish in Division 6N in 2017, the 3rd XI find themselves in a tougher Division 5 in 2018, with long trips to clubs such as Yeovil and Castle Cary meaning a mid table finish will be the target for a young team. With some excellent young talent at the club ready to step up from teams 4 and 5, it will be good to see them given the opportunity to perform in senior league cricket in the upcoming season, under a new captain – wicket keeper Josh Knight.

4th XI

Last season: 3rd (Somerset League – Division 8N)

League: Somerset League – Division 7N

Captain: Dave Howes

With the 5th team entering the Somerset League structure for 2018, the 4th XI went up to Division 7N from Division 8N. A comfortable 3rd place finish in 2017 means that they will not be out of their comfort zone, and another good finish should be well within their grasp. A number of young players made great contributions to the team last season, and they will all be looking to push on in the upcoming season.

5th XI

Last season: N/A (Played 5, won 4 in the Somerset Flexi League)

League: Somerset League – Division 8N

Captain: Paul Fleming

After some encouraging performances in friendly games in 2017, the 5th XI are well placed to make an impact in competitive league cricket in the upcoming season. Based at the picturesque Chapel Allerton ground for this season, it will exciting to see some of the youngest players at the club making their first steps into Saturday league cricket, and will definitely be in with a chance of winning games this year despite their inexperience.
