Weston First XI got off to an excellent start to the 2018 season with an eight wicket win away at Ilminster
Having won the toss and elected to bowl, Weston struck early with Tom Chambers removing opener Warry for 9 in the second over. Kraucamp and Vickery put on a stand of 55 for the second wicket before Ash Allen came on to bowl and removed Kraucamp for 32. The run rate then slowed considerably as Allen struck at regular intervals, finishing with figures of 10-2-23-4 at the end of an excellent spell of spin bowling. Pete Trego (10-4-30-1) struck in the second over of his second spell to leave Ilminster 96-6 in the 33rd over. Vickery was well supported by the tail as he reached his 50 off 130 balls. He carries his bat to end up 68 not out as they reached 155-8 from their 50 overs. Weston bowled economically, with figures of 1o overs for just 20 runs for Chris Davidson and 6 overs, 17-1 for Shabel Ahmed. Some superb catches were taken by Chambers, both Davidson brothers and captain Rob Turner.
Weston’s innings got off to a positive start with Andy Fear hitting a boundary from the first ball. He was out LBW in the second over, bringing Trego to the crease to partner 16 year old Jack Press. Both batted fluently, putting on 87, before Trego was bowled on 49. Press batted maturely with overseas players Ben Gully to reach his 50 in the 29th over. He finished 58 not out with Gully unbeaten on 31 as Weston reached their target in the 36th over.
This was an excellent start to the season after Weston’s promotion last year, giving the team hope for a positive season to come.
Forte Financial Player of the Match goes to Ash Allen for his game changing spell of bowling, with a special mention for young Jack Press who registered his maiden 1st XI 50
