The Under 13 Wizards won the North Somerset Youth Cricket League cup with a win on Thursday night against Chew Magna CC
The team have been dominant in both league and cup this season, winning all 7 of their games so far, and they showed their quality throughout the final.
Captain Davis Trego lost the toss and Weston fielded first, and they started well, with opening bowlers Will Crane and Dexter Trego both bowling good spells. They were rewarded for their accuracy with 2 wickets for Dexter. Each bowler kept us the pressure, with further wickets for Charlie Cunningham, Jack Trego and Harry Collard. The fielding from the whole team was excellent throughout, especially from George Nuttycombe on the boundary. For Chew Magna, Harry Charlesworth top scored with 34, as they reached 75-5 from their 20 overs.
In response, openers Davis and George batted confidently throughout, hitting some strong shots all round the ground. Davis reached his 50 in the 8th over, eventually finishing on on 52, with Charlie providing good support, finishing on 20, which included the shot of the innings – a glorious slog sweep for 6!
The 10 wicket win underlined the quality performance from the whole team, as they reached the target in just the 9th over. There was some excellent cricket on show from both teams, showing some great signs for the future.
The whole team thanked coach Sam Trego for his efforts over the last few seasons, and there is a real chance for the team to do the league and cup double!
A number of the players in the team have already represented Weston in senior league cricket, and there is a real hope that the whole team can go and have long and successful careers for the club.
The Under 15’s will hope to back up this cup win with their own success, when they take on Claverham CC on Tuesday 26th, at home on the main ground.
