Senior league teams ready for the season

The 5 Saturday league teams are ready for another exciting season of competitive cricket

With the warm-up games across April now finished, it’s time for all 5 teams to start their competitive league seasons, starting this Saturday 4th May.

1st XI

Captain: Chris Davidson

Vice-captain: Will Plummer

The 1st XI start their WEPL 2 season at home against newly promoted North Perrot. Chris Davidson returns to the captaincy role after a previous spell from 2013-2016, with new signing Will Plummer taking the role of vice-captain. There’s high hopes for this season for the team, having added other new signings Scott Harris and George Cox to a strong home-grown core, including Somerset’s Peter Trego, who will be available when professional commitments allow. Fellow Somerset player Paul van Meekeren is also retained in the squad, but unfortunately suffered an injury in April that stands to keep him out for several weeks. Head Coach Sam Trego has worked hard with the squad during the winter, and there’s genuine hope that the team can achieve promotion back to WEPL 1 after several seasons away.

2nd XI

Captain: Matt Huxtable

Vice-captain: Dominic Mayo

The 2nd XI will be looking to bounce back after a poor 2018 season, where huge unavailability from established players and general poor performance lead to them finishing bottom of Somerset Cricket League Division 2. Now in Division 3, the 2nd’s have managed to add some more experience with the return of several players, such as former 1st teamer Jason Neave, to the club. New captain Matt Huxtable also has 1st team experience, and will lead a strong team that must be aiming to return to Division 2.

3rd XI

Captain: Martyn Chambers

Vice-captain: Jamie Dance

The 3rd XI stay in Divison 5 for the 2019 season, having finished 4th from bottom last season. That in itself was an achievement, given the inexperience of the team throughout the season. For this season, Martyn Chambers has been appointed captain, and leads a team that should be a good mix of youth and experience, with several members of the strong U15 team hoping to play a major role with bat and ball.

4th XI

Captain: Terry Horler

Vice-captain: Adam Smith

The 4th XI are in Division 7 this season, led by new captain Terry Horler. As the next step up from the 5th XI, there’s a chance for the team to test themselves against some good players. There were some struggles last season with some inexperienced players, but a more settled team should hopefully lead to some positives performances and results.

5th XI

Captain: Mike Lee and Charlie Thompson

The 5th XI are an important team within the club, where many of our youngest players making their first steps into Saturday cricket. Playing at the picturesque Allerton cricket club ground, it’s a great opportunity for our young players to learn the game, develop their skills and hopefully win some games along the way. Mike Lee and Charlie Thompson will co-captain the team across the season, and with both being involved in youth cricket, there will be lots of young players getting the chance to play.
