1st XI tasted defeat in their opening pre-season friendly, going down by 4 wickets at home to Congresbury 1st XI
The visitors won the toss and bowled first. Weston openers, 2nd XI Captain Matt Huxtable and debutant Scott Harris, made a good start, putting on a 50 run opening stand. Their wickets were quickly followed by the wicket of Shabel Ahmed, but Chris Davidson and Will Plummer steadied things for a few overs. Plummer mistimed a pull that stuck in the pitch, and his wicket sparked a small collapse, as Kruz Belcher and Davidson followed quickly after. U15 Davis Trego played some good shots against the spinners, and Weston ultimately finished on a respectable 170-7 from their 40 overs.

In reply, Congresbury started well. Tom Chambers was unluckily called for a no-ball after clean bowling the opener, but their was some rusty deliveries that let the batsman move the score along. Yau (45) top scored with Congresbury, with support from Richardson (37) and Storey (30), and despite 3 wickets for Chambers and 2 for Shabel Ahmed, Congresbury got home by 4 wickets in the penultimate over.
Skipper Chris Davidson commented: “Whilst it was a frustrating day overall, i’m pleased that our batters got some time in the middle. It would have been better if one of them had capitalised on a start, but time in the middle is ultimately the most important thing at this stage of the season”.
The 1st XI are back in action next weekend, as the host Taunton St Andrews 1st XI.
